It’s Veganuary… the month more and more people give plant based diets a go! WINNER! But it can feel quite daunting to start out, and if you’re a die hard meat and dairy eater then there’s a good chance you’ll be comparing everything you consume to it’s ‘non vegan’ counterpart… and that’s OK! The fact you’re even giving it a go is amazing, but trust me, it does take some trial and error!
ORIGINALLY POSTED JANUARY 19TH 2021
I’ve now been Vegan for 14 months, but before that I was dairy free due to breastfeeding and my sons intolerances [but I’ll save all that for another post!] For me, I went Vegan BECAUSE of my son, the research I’d done on dairy meant there was no going back for me - but maybe you’re giving it a go for health reasons, because of your love for animals, maybe because of the huge positive impact it has on the planet or maybe you just want to see if you’re capable of eating a more plant based diet! Well I’m here to try and help! [And if you’re already Vegan and just here to see what swaps I LOVE, then I hope you find something you love too!]
I never use my space to ‘preach’ veganism, as I’ll happily admit people I’ve seen do that in past years are one of the reasons I ran away from learning more… it put me off! But I do share wonderful Vegan finds I come across and my inbox is always open, without judgement, if people want to ask me about anything! What I hear most from ‘non Vegans’ is “I love bacon/cheese/chocolate too much!” So let’s see if some of my favourite swaps can help you out… and some you might not even realise are in fact Vegan!!
Cadbury’s Drinking Chocolate
2. Food Heaven Vegan Squirty Cream
3. Richmond No Meat Sausages
4. Soya Milk [I buy Aldi’s own unsweetened]
5. Applewood Cheese
6. Galaxy Vegan Chocolate
7. Greggs Vegan Sausage Roll
8. Jammie Dodgers
10. Jackfruit [trust me]
Now that I’ve done 10 swaps I feel like I could go on and on and on, so maybe next I’ll do a post with a few of my favourite easy vegan recipes! But for now, I hope this helps you swap out some big things and find really tasty replacements. When people ask me about going vegan and ‘is it hard?’ I have to be honest and say for me, it wasn’t hard at all. But I spent a month doing research before I finally went vegan, and at that point, for me, there was no other option! But thanks to more and more people going Vegan it has become so main stream that every big store [and even small] are now selling more and more vegan goods and even a lot that isn’t marked vegan actually is! And if anything, you can shop for vegan food cheaper - if you’re happy to do the cooking!
And, if it’s a consideration you’re making - don’t rush it! Maybe try swapping out one meal a week and then move onto one day a week, see how you get on and don’t put pressure on yourself!
Good luck and my inbox is always open [or you can comment here and I’ll reply!] but if you’re looking for some helpful vegan pages to follow I can recommend a few to follow that will help you find all the van goodies in the supermarkets right now: @acidentallyveganuk @vegancanteen and @nowyouknowitsvegan
