Top 10 Vegan [Plant Based] Swaps You'll Want To Make

It’s Veganuary… the month more and more people give plant based diets a go! WINNER! But it can feel quite daunting to start out, and if you’re a die hard meat and dairy eater then there’s a good chance you’ll be comparing everything you consume to it’s ‘non vegan’ counterpart… and that’s OK! The fact you’re even giving it a go is amazing, but trust me, it does take some trial and error!

ORIGINALLY POSTED JANUARY 19TH 2021

I’ve now been Vegan for 14 months, but before that I was dairy free due to breastfeeding and my sons intolerances [but I’ll save all that for another post!] For me, I went Vegan BECAUSE of my son, the research I’d done on dairy meant there was no going back for me - but maybe you’re giving it a go for health reasons, because of your love for animals, maybe because of the huge positive impact it has on the planet or maybe you just want to see if you’re capable of eating a more plant based diet! Well I’m here to try and help! [And if you’re already Vegan and just here to see what swaps I LOVE, then I hope you find something you love too!]

I never use my space to ‘preach’ veganism, as I’ll happily admit people I’ve seen do that in past years are one of the reasons I ran away from learning more… it put me off! But I do share wonderful Vegan finds I come across and my inbox is always open, without judgement, if people want to ask me about anything! What I hear most from ‘non Vegans’ is “I love bacon/cheese/chocolate too much!” So let’s see if some of my favourite swaps can help you out… and some you might not even realise are in fact Vegan!!

  1. Cadbury’s Drinking Chocolate

It has to be this one as the other Cadbury’s hot chocolates are not vegan, but this is the one we’ve always drank anyway and LOVE!

2. Food Heaven Vegan Squirty Cream

Seems only right to move from hot chocolate to squirt cream! Whether it’s on deserts, a pumpkin spiced latte or a tasty hot choc - it’s arguably even better than it’s non-vegan counterpart!

3. Richmond No Meat Sausages

These are INCREDIBLE! Even my meat eating husband loves them and on the inside of the packet is a tasty vegan recipe to try too! I bake mine as breakfast butties, into pasta and sauce or simple with chips, they really are the tasty and succulent.

4. Soya Milk [I buy Aldi’s own unsweetened]

We are proper Northeners who love our brews - so finding a plant milk that actually tasted nice in a cup of tea and didn’t curdle was a long process of trial and error! For a long time we bought Oatly Barrista [the blue carton] and it was the only one we liked as almond milk, coconut milk and most other oat milks just didn’t cut it! Then we discovered Soya milk [which is packed with vitamins B-12 and Calcium] and it makes the perfect brew! So much so that my husband has also made the swap and we’re now a fully dairy free household! Though other plant milks are delicious in coffees and cereals.

5. Applewood Cheese

I’ve never been a massive cheese eater, but [pre-pandemic] I ordered a vegan sandwich at my local independent coffee shop and it was Sourdough with applewood vegan cheese, apple, chutney, cucumber, tomato and onion… DELICIOUS! And then I went on the search for that same cheese! By FAR the best vegan cheese I’ve tried and they also do a smoked version… thank me later!

6. Galaxy Vegan Chocolate

YUM! Last year Galaxy released a standard vegan chocolate bar and it’s the best I’ve tasted… but they’ve since released loads of flavours AND this year will see Cadbury’s release their first vegan chocolate bar too! There are loads of vegan chocolate companies around, but personally I think they all taste too ‘coconuty’ and I’ve never really been a fan of coconut. Though this Veganuary Aldi have brought out 3 vegan chocolate bars: Blonde, Dark and Classic and the Blonde one is delicious too!

7. Greggs Vegan Sausage Roll

It really does live up to the hype! In January 2020 thousands of Greggs employees received a £300 bonus thanks to the success of the Vegan sausage roll sales - and meat eaters were also opting for it too! I also hear they’re now [or soon to be] available to buy in the freezer section of Iceland! Greggs also provide the goods for your sweet tooth too with vegan ring doughnuts and at Christmas - mince pies!

8. Jammie Dodgers

In July 2020 Jammie Dodgers removed milk protein from their recipe to make then Vegan Friendly!!

9. Pizza

Aldi’s Jackfruit pizza goes down a storm in this household, they have 3 flavours I’ve seen/tried but this is our favourite! Don’t let ‘jackfruit’ put you off… I’ll talk about that in point 10! But if you love a takeaway Dominos and Papa Johns also offer vegan pizzas AND sides [PJ has a bigger selection though] including vegan friendly garlic dip - YUM!

10. Jackfruit [trust me]

Yes… it’s a fruit. And yes… you buy it in a tin near the tinned fruit! But don’t knock it before you’ve tried it, it really is to do with how you cook it! In Aldi I think it’s 90p-£1 a tin and I can feed me, my husband and Henry with that [along with everything else of course, but this is in replacement for meat!] One of my favourite things to make us is Jackfruit Fajitas with chips - cooking the jackfruit in lots of herbs, paprika, garlic and soy sauce! It’s texture and taste will be just like meat when you’re done and can be used [depending on how you cook it] as a replacement for pulled pork, chicken and even tuna!

Now that I’ve done 10 swaps I feel like I could go on and on and on, so maybe next I’ll do a post with a few of my favourite easy vegan recipes! But for now, I hope this helps you swap out some big things and find really tasty replacements. When people ask me about going vegan and ‘is it hard?’ I have to be honest and say for me, it wasn’t hard at all. But I spent a month doing research before I finally went vegan, and at that point, for me, there was no other option! But thanks to more and more people going Vegan it has become so main stream that every big store [and even small] are now selling more and more vegan goods and even a lot that isn’t marked vegan actually is! And if anything, you can shop for vegan food cheaper - if you’re happy to do the cooking!

And, if it’s a consideration you’re making - don’t rush it! Maybe try swapping out one meal a week and then move onto one day a week, see how you get on and don’t put pressure on yourself!

Good luck and my inbox is always open [or you can comment here and I’ll reply!] but if you’re looking for some helpful vegan pages to follow I can recommend a few to follow that will help you find all the van goodies in the supermarkets right now: @acidentallyveganuk @vegancanteen and @nowyouknowitsvegan
